At Artful Hands Studio, creativity and sustainability go hand in hand. One of the simpletes and most fun ways to teach kids (and adults!) about recyling is by melting down old broken crayons and turning them into fun, colorful, brand new ones. Instead of tossing those tiny crayon pieces into the trash, you can transform them into colorful works of art!

This activity is perfor for families, classrooms, or a creative afternoon at home. It's easy, inexpensive, and a great way to give art supplies a second life.

Why Recycle Crayons?

Crayons are a staple in many homes and classrooms, but they often end up broken into small pieces that are hard to use. Rather than throwing them away, melting them down allows you to reuse every last bit.

Benefifs of recycling crayons include reduces wastes, teaches kids about sustainability, encourages creativity, creates unique multi-color crayons, and gives old supplies new life. Plus, the results are always a surprise - each crayon melts into a unique beautiful swirl of colors!

What You'll Need

This project uses simple materials you may already have at home.

Supplies:

  • Old or broken crayons

  • Silicone molds (fun shapes, letters, animals, or seasonal designs)

  • Baking sheet

  • Oven

  • Paper towels for cleanup

  • Optional: Star, heart, etc sequins to add sparkle to your crayons

Tip: Silicone molds work best because the crayons pop out easily once they cool and allows for easy clean up.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Peel the Crayons

Remove the paper wrappers from your crayons. Some brands may have 2-3 layers of wrapper. If you find that to be the case for your crayons you can use an exacto knife or utility knife to make a slit in the wrapper. It won't matter if you cut the crayon as it will be melted down. This makes removal much easier, faster, and save your fingers from becoming sore later! If your kids are helping, be sure an adult uses the knife while the kids peel off the paper.

  2. Break Them into Pieces

Snap the crayons into small chunks. This helps them melt faster and allows you to mix different colors together. Tip: separate all of the reds together, greens together, yellows together. etc. This helps you choose your colors for each mold easier.

  3. Fill Your Silicone Molds

If you are using any shaped sequins to add some sparkle to your crayons go ahead and place them in the bottom of the mold. Then, add the crayon pieces into the silicone molds. Be sure to fill each mold all the way to the top. You can mix colors to create a rainbow swirl or keep colors together for a similar blended look. (Different brands will vary in their like colors which will create a cool ombre swirl effect!) Letter molds are especially fun because the kids can create crayons that spell their name!

  4. Melt the Crayons

Place the molds on a baking sheet and put them in the oven at 250 degrees for about 10-15 minutes, or until the crayons are completely melted.

  5. Let Them Cool

Carefully remove the tray and allow the molds to cool completely. Once hardened, pop the crayons out of the mold. It could take several hours to cure to don't be in a rush. You want to make sure the crayon is solid all the way to the bottom of the mold vessel.

That's it! Now you have brand new crayons in fun shapes , sizes,

and colors. Kids will love drawing with these to see how the colors show up on payer and will be proud to say they helped make them!

With Artful Hands Studio, projects like this help kids learn that creativity doesn't always require brand new materials. Sometimes the most exciting art comes from reimagining what we already have.

Crafting is more than just making something beautiful - it's also a chance to teach kids about reusing materals and caring for our planet. When children see that broken crayons can become something brand new and beautiful, they begin to understand the power of creativity and sustainability working together.

So the next time you find a pile of tiny crayon pieces at the bottom of the art bin or desk drawer, don't throw them away. Melt them down and create something colorful, fun, and brand new!
